Homemade Whitening Toothpaste Recipe

Baking Soda Toothpaste
This is a very simple homemade toothpaste recipe with only a few, cheap ingredients. This all natural formula is fluoride free, making it a healthy option for everyone in the home. You likely have these ingredients right in your pantry, so this is also a great substitute if you forgot to pick up your favorite toothpaste at the store.

A Healthy Toothpaste Alternative
If you pay attention to the ingredient list on most toothpastes you find at the store, you will notice they are full of ingredients that you probably don’t know. These are also known as chemicals! And although they are “safe” in small amounts, toothpaste is something that you use twice a day every day of your life. The toothpaste you choose for yourself and your family is important for more than just your oral health. This is a great option for toddlers just starting to get teeth, children who are brushing on their own, and even pets.

Homemade Toothpaste Recipe
This homemade toothpaste is made from:
- Baking soda
- Coconut oil
- Optional: xylitol, salt, or activated charcoal powder
- Optional: essential oils
Start with 2-4 tablespoons of baking soda.

Add coconut oil 1 tablespoon at a time until you get a paste that is a consistency you like. In place of coconut oil you can use hydrogen peroxide or water, although I do recommend coconut oil for its benefits. Xylitol can be added for the extra abrasiveness and a little sweetness. Salt can be added for the extra abrasiveness, as well as its antibacterial properties. Activated charcoal powder can be added as an additional whitener. Essential oils are good for adding flavor and their cleaning properties. You only need a few drops of essential oils in this toothpaste.

Essential Oils for Your Homemade Toothpaste
Essential oils are an excellent additive to this homemade toothpaste because of their ability to kill germs that cause bad breath and tooth decay. They can also help with gum health since they are considered to be antimicrobial. Some good options for this recipe include:
- Cinnamon
- Peppermint
- Spearmint
- Teatree
- Myrrh
- Clove
- Oregano
I like to mix oregano, clove, and cinnamon for a delicious, clean feeling toothpaste!

Fluoride Free
Although our bodies need fluoride, it is supplemented synthetically in our water, toothpaste, mouthwash, and other products. Too much fluoride can actually cause bone decay, thyroid problems, and even cognitive delays to a developing brain. It is a documented neurotoxin that is considered hazardous to child development, potentially causing ADHD. It is recommended to not give a child fluoride before the age of six because of the effects it can have on their teeth. There is a long list of potential side effects for children and adults when being exposed to too much fluoride. That is why a fluoride free toothpaste is preferred in a health conscious home.

Whitening
Although you may not notice instant, dramatic results like you would from harsh whitening products, but that is because those kinds of products cause severe damage to the outer layer of your teeth. Baking soda is slightly abrasive giving it the ability to whiten your teeth without damaging your enamel. The coconut oil in this toothpaste also contributes to whiter teeth.

Reduces Plaque
Baking soda is alkaline, so it will neutralize the acid in your mouth. This keeps the bacteria from being able to attach to your teeth and grow, which is the build up of plaque. It will also reduce gum bleeding and inflammation. The coconut oil in this toothpaste has antimicrobial properties as well, so it also fights the bacteria in your mouth that cause bad breath and tooth decay.
